Death Race (2008 version) takes place in a private prison called Terminal Island. The American economy has collapsed in 2012 (hey! That's hitting a bit close to home). The racers get armed, armored cars--and if they win five races, they go free (no one ever has). Jason Statham is an ex-pro racer who winds up in jail following some suspicious circumstances around his wife's murder. It gives us as the Joan Allen warden in stead of Sandy McCallum as (DR 2000's) president.This time instead of killing pedestrians the racers are trying to kill each other. They have machine guns, armor, and even rockets. In order to prevent a stationary fire-fight the weapons are activated after the first lap and the race takes place over several days. Death Race's creators have done a reasonable job of working out the contest.
The races themselves look pretty good. The soundtrack is hard scored and the camera angles make the meat of the movie reasonably intense. At 89 minutes it is actually five minutes longer than Death Race 2000 and its shortness is probably a virtue. Statham makes for an intense main character who uses his martial arts skills to play a credible action hero. The movie's structure is predictable (for one sterling moment I thought a major antagonist might die off the track--but it wasn't to be ...).
The movie gets the pay-per-view tropes down perfectly. You can believe they're hunting for ratings (and the ppv ethic doesn't work as well as their voice-overs and stats: messing with the rules in mid-contest would draw protests from people who had money on the race).Death Race is light on the message, heavy on the action, and looks pretty good. It's exciting and action packed and works pretty well as blow-things-up summer movie.
